Edulantern.com - The HKBU Journalism Fellowship Scheme (HKBU-JFS) is for mid-career journalists from Asian countries and territories. Institute for Journalism and Society (IJS), Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and the Timothy Yu Communication Education Foundation offer opportunities to journalists to strengthen their professional skills, exchange experience and ideas with colleagues from different backgrounds and from other parts of the continent, enhance knowledge and understanding of hot issues and topics in the region and build friendships and professional networks.
During the fellowship, all fellows would be able to
1. Attend various courses and seminars
2. Conduct classroom sharing with HKBU students
3. Meet with Pulitzer winners
4. Organise pro-seminar to discuss individual projects
5. Write feature reports on Global Student Film Festival
6. Visit media organisations in Hong Kong
7. Participate in different cultural activities
Benefits:
1. Monthly allowances of USD2,500 (including monthly rate of USD900 for staying at HKBU’s NTT International House).
2. Refund of one return air ticket (economy class) from your country of residence to Hong Kong.
Eligibility Criteria:
1. Be a citizen of an Asian country or territory and currently working and residing in Asia
2. Have at least three-years’ work experience as a journalist
3. Be able to speak and write in English
4. Have your employer’s agreement in writing for your application. Freelance journalists are eligible, provided that journalism is the main source of income
5. Agree to adhere to all relevant guidelines and arrangements of the fellowship
Required Documents:
1. Complete the application form (Download)
2. A 500-word personal statement about yourself, your work and your thoughts on the values of journalism. You also need to state your expectations for the scheme and how the fellowship would benefit you personally and professionally
3. Outline of your proposed journalism project, including topic and methodologies
4. Letter of recommendation from two referees. They must be people who know you and your work well and could be contacted if needed. At least one referee should be a news editor or journalist
5. Samples of your work. At least three samples of your published or broadcast work. If your work is not in English, you need to include a one-paragraph synopsis in English for each story. If your sample is in multimedia format, you can provide us with an online link
